The Link-Quality Test.

Judge the Page That Mentions You — Not a Score on the Domain

The Short Answer

The Link-Quality Test judges a single mention by reading the page that carries it: would the page exist, and would the sentence make sense, without the link?

A mention is useful when a related page would exist without the follow credit, and the sentence would still make sense if the URL were removed. Comments, profiles, and sitewide footers are the placements spam scaled. A vendor domain score is not a ranking system. Paid follows must be marked. There is no official one-to-a-thousand ratio.

The Question This Article Answers

How do you tell a good backlink from a bad one? Read the page that mentions you. If the sentence still makes sense with the URL removed, it is writing; if not, it is a placement. Links are one ranking system among many — they do not retire the page you publish, and no vendor score decides which kind of mention you have.

Read the page that mentions you. A vendor score is not a ranking system.
Four placements: in the sentence a person is reading; at the end as a source; in a footer on every page; in a profile or comment. The first two can be publishing. The last two are usually a package.
Figure 1. Four placements at a glance — in the sentence, at the end as a source, in a footer, in a profile or comment. The paid case makes the five classes below. A single relevant partner in a footer can still be a real mention.
Would this page exist if it could not pass a follow link? Yes: placement is secondary, read the sentence. No: package. Would-This-Exist already failed.
Figure 2. This is Earned-Mention applied to the other URL.
A mock dashboard headed Vendor Domain Score, with illustrative bars for three example sites at 78, 62, and 41 on a vendor-score axis. The catch: no search engine ever reads this number — a vendor domain score is a private estimate the vendor recomputes, not a ranking system. Judge the page that mentions you, not a number on the domain.
Figure 3. Vendor domain scores, page grades, and “toxic” scores are vendor products. They are not Google.

Five Classes of Placement

Class · What it usually is · Which test to open
CitationIn the sentence, on a page a person would read
Publishing. The honest version of “good.”Which test to open: Earned-Mention
SourceAt the end, a source the article actually used
Still publishing if the page would exist without the followWhich test to open: Earned-Mention
SitewideFooter or blogroll sold as a package
Named link-spam pattern when the job is the creditWhich test to open: Would-This-Exist
Drive-byComment, signature, or profile field
Named spam vehicle when automated for rankWhich test to open: Retired-Tactic
AdPaid placement
Allowed as advertising if marked sponsored or nofollowWhich test to open: Link-Attribute · Anchor-Text

A famous host does not turn a sold sitewide footer into a different object. A contextual sentence on a page that exists only to hold that sentence is still a package. If many “different” hosts share a costume, that is Network-Footprint — not a shopping list of IP classes.

Raw link count is the wrong unit. There is no official “you need N backlinks.” Google’s John Mueller said it plainly in a 2021 Ask Googlebot episode on link counts: systems weigh individual links; the total number is not the thing to optimize, because a pile can be ignored. Ten URLs from one neighborhood are not ten independent votes — that is Sister-Site. A referring-domain tally in a vendor tool is still an estimate — the Domain-Score Test — not a quota.

Nofollow is not worthless. People can still click. It is the honest mark when you paid.

Read One Mention

The method fits in one move: quote the sentence that carries your URL, delete the URL, and read it again.

Survives the cut. “A regional installer’s public failure log — photographs, dates, part numbers — documented the same fault across three winters.” Remove the link and the sentence is still journalism; the URL was a courtesy to the reader. That is a citation.

Collapses. “For the best emergency plumbing Dallas homeowners trust, visit our partners.” Remove the link and nothing is left standing — the sentence exists to hold the URL. That is a placement, whatever the host’s score says.

The Same Test on the AI Surface

Vendor scores do not exist inside answer engines. A model deciding whom to cite is not reading a third-party authority number; it is reading the page — the sentence, the writing around it, the reason the page exists. So the read-the-page method gets stronger on the AI surface, not weaker. The Citation-Surface Test is the same judgment applied to your own pages; the Recognition-Mention Test covers being named without being linked.

Do not do tonight: buy a “contextual package,” or treat a vendor domain score as Google.

Official-Path Next Step

  1. Open the other URL. Would that page exist if it could not pass a follow link?
  2. Read the sentence. Would it still make sense if the URL were removed?
  3. If you paid, mark it. Qualify outbound links.
  4. If many hosts rhyme, open Network-Footprint. Do not modernize the costume.
The sentence to keep. Judge the page that mentions you. Placement is a clue. A vendor score is not a ranking system.

Questions

Does one good mention beat a thousand bad ones?

Quality beats bulk spam. There is no official ratio. Do not use that sentence as a buying plan.

Is a link from a famous site always good?

No. A sold sitewide footer on a famous host is still a sold sitewide footer. Read the page that carries the mention, not the masthead.

Do backlinks matter for AI visibility?

Indirectly. Answer engines cite pages, not link graphs — but the pages they cite are usually the ones other writers already treat as sources. The earned mention and the AI citation are the same object found two ways.

Should I pay for “toxic link” cleanup?

“Toxic” is a vendor label, not a Google category. Most obvious junk is simply ignored. Disavow exists for real cases — a manual action or an attack — not as a subscription. The Negative-SEO Test is the ordered walk.

Do internal links count as backlinks?

No. Internal links are navigation and structure on a site you control; a backlink is a vote you do not control. Both matter — they are different instruments.

Should I disavow every comment link?

No. Most obvious junk is ignored. Disavow is last. Negative-SEO Test.
