The SEO Pitch Test.

What a Sales Meeting Is Allowed to Promise

The Short Answer

The SEO Pitch Test sorts every sales-meeting promise into allowed (work you can supervise), caution (labeled assumptions), or refused (positions no engine sells).

This page is written for the person in the other chair. A pitch can name the work, the queries, the surface, and the way you will see it in Search Console. It cannot name first place. Google’s hiring guide already wrote that sentence. This article is the meeting checklist that follows from it.

Two columns for an SEO sales meeting, built from Google's hiring guide. Allowed: named queries and pages, Search Console access, a 90-day work list, a timeline spoken as a range. Refused: a guaranteed first place, a special relationship with Google, priority submit, and guaranteed placement in AI answers.

The Question This Article Answers

Industry “how to sell SEO” talks are training for the seller, not the buyer. They do not belong on this site. The useful object underneath them is the promise being made to you. If the promise cannot survive Google’s hiring page, it cannot survive the first quarter.

Write the promise in one sentence. Does it name work you can supervise — or a ranking nobody can contract?

Allowed vs Refused

AllowedNamed queries. Named pages. Search Console access. A 90-day work list. Which surface — organic, pack, name search, overview. What happens if the query is unwinnable.
CautionA sample forecast that labels its assumptions. A case study with a live URL and dates. A timeline spoken as a range, not a date. AI-visibility work with a named mechanism and dated engine runs as the evidence.
RefuseGuaranteed first place. Guaranteed inclusion in AI Overviews, or a promise that ChatGPT will recommend you — no engine sells that placement either. Special relationship with Google. Priority submit. You must link to them. Owned-network links. “Content does not matter.” “Secret sauce” / a proprietary process they will not write on a calendar.
Not the meetingProof of a past claim is the Vendor Claim Test. Whether work shipped is the Work-Log Test. Whether the invoice still fits is Retainer Fit.

What the Hiring Guide Already Forbids

Updated 5 June 2026, “Do you need an SEO?”:

  • No one can guarantee a #1 ranking.
  • Beware a “special relationship” or “priority submit.”
  • Be wary of unsolicited email that says you are “not listed in the major engines.”
  • You should never have to link to the SEO.
  • Advertising with Google does not buy organic placement.
  • If they are secretive about methods, treat that as a warning.

A polished room is not a substitute for those sentences. If they cannot explain the work in language you can take to URL Inspection, you cannot supervise the month.

“Secret sauce” and “proprietary process” are the same warning with a nicer label. If the work cannot be named, it cannot be logged — that is the Work-Log Test. If it cannot produce a checkable URL, it is not a result — that is the Live-URL Test. The AI-era version follows the same grammar: a guaranteed spot in AI answers is a position no engine sells, and an “AI visibility” promise is only evidence as a dated engine run — engine, question, date, answer text — never as a dashboard score.

What You Ask in the Room

  1. Which queries, and which surface? A scope that names the target is one you can check later; “more traffic” is not.
  2. Which URLs will change in the first 90 days? Work you can open beats a strategy deck.
  3. Will I have Search Console? Read-only is enough to start — the numbers should live in an account you own.
  4. What does the monthly list of work look like? That is the Work-Log Test, agreed to in advance.
  5. Show one past property with dates — not a logo. That is the Vendor Claim Test, run before you sign.
  6. If this query is unwinnable, what do we do instead? An honest vendor has a second plan. A seller has only the guarantee.
  7. Why this quota — five mentions, two pages — for this query and this URL? A number that cannot be explained is a package, not a plan.

Ask what a customer is worth only so you can decide whether search is even the channel. That number is yours. It is not their forecast dressed as a guarantee.

A contract that cannot name the work is the problem, not the existence of a contract — that is the Contract-Term Test. A course certificate is not a search-engine license — that is the Credential Test.

From the Room to the Scope

The fastest way to hear a pitch clearly is to rewrite it. A refused sentence often contains an allowed one trying to get out.

Heard in the room · What it becomes in a scope
“We guarantee page one”
“We will ship X pages and earn Y mentions against these named queries, visible in Search Console, reviewed at 90 days.”
“We get clients into AI answers”
“Here is a dated run for a past client: the engine, the question, the answer. Here is the mechanism we would work on for you.”
“Our process is proprietary”
“Here is the first month’s work list. Some templates are ours; every change to your site will be named.”
“Trust us, we have big brands”
“Here is one property with dates and a person you can call.”

If the vendor cannot make the right-hand sentence, the left-hand one was the whole product.

Do not do tonight: sign because the meeting felt confident, or accept first place as a contract term.

Official-Path Next Step

  1. Write their promise in one sentence after the call.
  2. Run the calculator.
  3. If it is allowed, demand it in the scope. Then run Vendor Claim on the proof and Work-Log on month one.
  4. If it is refused language, end the meeting. The Ranking-Problem Test tells you what job you actually have.
The sentence to keep. A sales meeting can promise work you can see. It cannot promise a position Google does not sell.

Questions

They Were Honest and Still Could Not Guarantee a Date. Is That a Bad Sign?

No. That is the hiring guide. A date with first place attached is the bad sign.

They Offered Free Keyword Research on the Call. Is That Useful?

Useful only if volume and intent are shown and it becomes part of the written scope. A sample list is not a contract.

They Promised a Number of Leads per Month. Allowed?

As a labeled forecast, caution. As a contract term, refuse — leads route through rankings nobody can contract and conversion work that may not be in the scope. Put the work in the scope and measure leads in a system you own. The Traffic-Metric Test covers which numbers are yours.

They Showed an “AI Visibility Score” Dashboard. Is That a Real Metric?

It is a vendor chart. The evidence shape for AI visibility is a dated engine run you can reproduce: the engine, the question, the date, the answer text. The Generative-Impression Test covers what those numbers can and cannot mean.

Is a Money-Back Guarantee a Red Flag or a Courtesy?

Read what triggers it. A refund tied to work not shipped is a courtesy. A refund tied to a ranking is a first-place guarantee wearing a safety label — the position still is not theirs to sell.
