The First-Week Test.
Crawl, Index, Then Rank — Ads, Design, and a Writing Calendar Are Adjacent Jobs
The First-Week Test asks whether a new site's first week produced one fetchable page matched to one named query — before ads, design, or a writing calendar.
Search finds public pages, stores them, then sorts what to show for a query. A URL that cannot be fetched never reaches rank. Name one query and one page before you hire a designer, buy an ad, or start a writing calendar. Search Console is the first-party log. There is no official 200-item checklist.
The Question This Article Answers
What is SEO, and what is a different job sitting on the same website? This page does not reprint Authority Gap, Popular-Advice, or First-Index. It is the first week: fetch the URL, match one query, then worry about mentions.

What This Job Is
| Work | Is it organic rank? | Open |
|---|---|---|
| A crawlable page that answers one query | Yes — Found + Matched | Starter Guide · Topic-Fit |
| Independent mentions of that URL | Yes — Believed on contested queries | Earned-Mention |
| A paid text ad | No — different auction | Keep it labeled |
| A redesign or a checkout test | Adjacent — business, not the ranking system | Do not sell as SEO |
| A writing calendar with no named query | Incomplete | Content-Quota · Popular-Advice |
How Search Works does not publish a current official list of “200 factors.” It describes many signals after relevance, including whether other prominent sites refer to the work. People-first pages are official. Systems try to surface useful, reliable answers. They do not judge your prose like an editor.

Official-Path Next Step
- Create a Search Console property. Inspect the money URL. If it cannot be fetched, stop.
- Name one query a customer types. Write one page that answers it. Topic-Fit.
- If the phrase is quiet, First-Index. If it is contested, Authority Gap.
- Log the work for 30 days on that URL — the Work-Log Test is the instrument. Do not add a calendar until the first page is found and matching.
The Week, Day by Day
| Day | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 | Verify the Search Console property and inspect the money URL. |
| 2 | Name the one query the page answers, in writing. |
| 3 | Run the fetch checks: robots, noindex, canonical host. |
| 4 | Write or repair the one page so it answers that query. |
| 5 | Submit the sitemap and request indexing on the money URL. |
| 6 | Start the honest mention: one real partner, association, or profile that would mention you anyway. |
| 7 | Record the baseline — impressions and position, whatever Search Console shows — and stop touching it. |
AI visibility in week one is the same work. The fetchability that lets Googlebot read the page is what lets AI crawlers read it, and there is nothing extra to buy in week one. When the page is live and fetchable, the Citation-Surface Test measures whether assistants can use it.
Questions
Is SEO Just Keywords in the Title?
No. Titles help match. They do not replace a fetchable page or independent mentions. Popular-Advice.
Do I Need Mentions in Week One?
Not if the phrase is almost empty. First-Index. You still need them before you treat a contested head term as a writing job.
