The Preview-Control Test.

nosnippet, noindex, and the Generative AI Control Are Settings — Not a Ranking Package

The Short Answer

The Preview-Control Test checks the switches that allow or refuse a preview — noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet, the generative AI control — before any citation question.

Owners treat preview tags as dark arts. They are documented controls. The official generative AI control is a property setting in Search Console. An llms.txt file is not that control.

The question this article answers

Official AI-features guidance: to be eligible for generative AI features on Google Search, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. noindex removes the page from the index. nosnippet and tight max-snippet change what can be shown as a preview. The Search generative AI control, documented in Search Console help, is the property-level opt-out for those features.

None of those switches is a way to force a citation. They are how you allow or refuse a preview. A vendor who sells “AI snippet optimization” as a secret file is selling a setting you already have. This page is the eligibility half of the Citation-Surface Test: before any citation question is asked, is the URL allowed to be previewed at all?

Where the Directive Hides

A preview directive has three homes: the page’s robots meta tag, the x-robots-tag HTTP header, and — the most common real-world case — a CMS SEO plugin’s site-wide default the owner never chose. Check all three before concluding that anyone decided anything. A setting nobody remembers making is still a setting the crawler obeys.

Which Switch Does What

You wantThe documented switchDoes nothing for this

One consequence owners ask about, answered by Google’s own eligibility line: AI features require the page to be eligible to show with a snippet — so nosnippet is not “listed without a quote” inside an Overview, it is out of the feature. In classic results it is listed without preview text. A preview limit on a page you want cited is self-silencing.

A four-row ledger of official preview switches. noindex keeps the page out of Search and AI features; nosnippet lists it with no preview text; max-snippet caps how much preview text can show; the generative AI control includes or excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Each names what it is not — an llms.txt file, a purchased AI snippet file, a penalty. Documented owner switches, not a ranking product.
Figure 1. Four official switches. None of them is a ranking product.
A four-step eligibility chain for Google's AI features: indexed, then snippet-eligible, then the generative AI control set to include, then the page can appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. That is eligibility, never a pin — and an llms.txt file is not this control; Google Search does not use that file.
Figure 2. Indexed, snippet-eligible, and included. That is eligibility, not a pin.
Two columns. A setting you made: you set nosnippet or a tight max-snippet, or switched the generative AI control off — the preview is refused by your own choice, a control you can inspect and reverse. Not a setting: a competitor was named and your page was never fetched — that is the Citation-Surface question, a different test.

Do not do tonight: pay for an “AI snippet file,” or flip nosnippet on a page you still want cited.

Official-path next step

  1. Inspect robots meta and x-robots-tag on the live URL — and the SEO plugin’s defaults panel, where the surprise usually lives.
  2. Confirm index status in Search Console.
  3. Open the official Search generative AI control. Do not confuse it with robots.txt.
The sentence to keep. Is this URL allowed to be previewed — or did a setting remove it from the feature?

Questions

Will nosnippet raise rankings?

No. It limits the preview. It is not a ranking boost.

Is the generative AI control the same as a robots.txt rule for AI crawlers?

No. One is a Google Search property setting. robots.txt speaks to crawlers; the Search control speaks to Search features. Different lists, different systems — the setting governs what Google Search assembles, not who fetches your pages.

If we opt out of generative AI features, do classic rankings change?

The control is documented as governing generative AI features. It is not documented as a classic ranking input. Re-read the setting’s own help page before acting on any stronger claim, in either direction.
